Merchant ships: the transition from sails to engines

Until not so many years ago, goods were mainly transported by sea. Ships that became ever larger and more powerful made it possible to transport greater volumes of goods. Engines gradually replaced sail power. In Catalonia, this transition from sails to engines lasted from the beginning of the 20th century right up to the 1960s.

In the virtual exhibition Merchant ships: the transition from sails to engines, we present a selection of images from the photographic archives of the Museu Marítim de Barcelona and the Institut d’Estudis Fotogràfics de Catalunya which illustrate this process. A chance to examine online a selection of photographs and images from the collections of two cultural institutions that are important for the conservation of maritime heritage and culture in Catalonia and the Mediterranean.
