Through these seven vessels, we present seven stories told by seven people from all the different centuries who recount their surprising seagoing adventures. The exhibition deals with universal issues such as the discovery of the world, the sea as a place for leisure, life on board a transatlantic liner, the sea as the setting for warfare, cargo and its handling, pirates and corsairs, and changes in technology.
The Santa Maria de la Victoria, a sloop from the 20th century, the transatlantic liner the Royal Edward, the mixed vessel the City of Paris, the container ship Pilar, an 80-cannon warship and the xebec Santa Cristina are the 7 protagonists of the exhibition’s different sections. Linked with each of these vessels, visitors can hear the testimonies of people such as a longshoreman, a Navy officer, a woman bather in Barcelona in the 1930s, a ship’s captain in 1890, the son of a mapmaker in 1300, a cook on a transatlantic liner and a woman from the 17th century whose children have been kidnapped by pirates.
The exhibition features more than 80 items, including nautical and spherical charts, atlases, globes, theodolites, advertising posters, bathing costumes, engravings, paintings and cannons from the Museu Marítim de Barcelona collection. The exhibition also features interactive displays that function through the senses of smell, sound and touch.
