Porters were professionals who used their strength to carry merchandise around Barcelona. The book of ordinances of their guild contains a series of provisions that regulate the operation and the organization of the guild: “Ordinances signed by King Ferdinand VI, God save him, in the year 1754, in favour of the Guild of Faquins and Macips de Ribera of this City”; “Royal decree given by his majesty in 1804, for the foundlings of the Holy Hospital”; “Ordinances from May 25th, 1748 regarding the terms of access to the Porters’ guild by the sons of guild members”; “Ordinances from November 11th, 1754, regarding hiring workers to drive carts, the admission of new members and working conditions.”
