Ex-votos

An example of the pursuit of slave traffic by the British Navy in the 19th century. In this case, the ex-voto represents the barca de mitjana Uracán, pursued by the English steamer Graules for trafficking in slaves. The painting narrates an event from 1845 and was made many years later by José Pineda, one of the most famous and prolific Spanish painters of ships. After a short career as a navigator, Pineda dedicated himself to painting, setting up a workshop that is said to have produced some 3,000 pieces.
