Paintings

The sea, ships, and everything that surrounds them have always been of great interest to artists. Sometimes, the result is a seascape, where the sea, the sky or the coast serve as the protagonists. At other times, paintings represent a port or a city, either because of their prestige or their beauty. Museums also include portraits of individuals from the maritime world, or paintings showing battle scenes or historical events related to the sea.

The paintings that can be found at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona include different formats and techniques, but they generally address themes related to Catalan sailing and its history. As a result, pieces from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries especially abound. This includes paintings by notable artists like Meifrèn, Batistuzzi, Hernández Monjo, Llaverias, Baixeras or Soler Rovirosa.
