Tempera painting on canvas showing the true Barcelona of 1889. This was the year after the great Universal Exposition of 1888, a key moment when Barcelona was becoming an industrial capital and ships were making the transition from sail to steam power. In this painting, Soler i Rovirosa looks at Barcelona from a different angle, with a view taken from the beginning of the Moll de la Riba. The painter’s point of view has even caused some to suspect that the original was mounted on a curved frame, which would give it a different visual effect. Soler Rovirosa is the author of different landscapes for decorating cafes and restaurants, and this large painting (7 meters long) may have been meant for such an establishment.
