Competing at sea (FINALITZADA)

The history of regattas in Catalonia,

Handy information
Competing at sea

Competing at sea”, is an exhibition that explores the history of Catalan regattas, from their emergence in beach clubs to their consolidation through a large number of elite sportsmen and women who take part in major national and international competitions.

During the 19th century, recreational use of the sea in Catalonia was limited to bathing and outings in rowing boats. The first documented competition was held in Barcelona on 10 June 1821, using rowing boats. Since then, nautical clubs began springing up, the first of which was in Tarragona in 1878, to promote rowing and, later, sailing.

Sailing on the Catalan coast saw a major upsurge in the 1960s, with the creation of many nautical clubs, marinas and, of course, fleets. The proliferation of regattas gave rise to a flourishing nautical industry, with prominent companies such as Industrial Velera Marsal, Manufacturas Mistral and Toni Tió, among others. The consolidation of nautical sports brought about the emergence of elite sportsmen and women in all types of regattas.

“Competing at sea” reviews the leading names in Olympic regattas, ocean sailing, solo regattas at the highest level, the mini class, and many more who have become benchmarks both for their generation and those that have followed.

Catalonia is an ideal place for sailing, as demonstrated by the number of regattas that are held, both locally and internationally. As a result, almost 34,000 sportsmen and women are members of the federation, including more than 27,000 school children.

This exhibition is part of the Cultural Regatta, the program of activitiesto accompany the celebration of the America’s Sailing Cup in Barcelona.
