The port, border territory

A look at everyday life in the public and private spaces of the districts surrounding the Port of Barcelona

Handy information
The port, border territory

This exhibition takes a look at everyday life in the public and private spaces of the districts surrounding the Port of Barcelona: Poble-Sec, the Paral·lel, Montjuïc, Barceloneta, Somorrostro and the now-disappeared shantytown districts of Pequín and Camp de la Bota. The text for the exhibition was written by the anthropologist and author Xavier Theros (Barcelona, 1963).

The exhibition includes archive images from the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, Barcelona Port Authority, Barcelona Photographic Archives and the Miquel Carreras Library at the Bosch i Cardellach Foundation. The display also includes film footage and watercolour images of characters from the period, fragments from the films Los Tarantos, Panorama du port 1 i 2 and La Barcelona Marinera, as well as three set designs. One of the most unusual items is a jukebox – a series 1 Sinfonola 2000 model, manufactured in 1975 and donated for the exhibition from the Kentucky bar in Barcelona’s Raval district.

The set designs take the visitor on a path through a series of blocks that look like cement, arranged in the form of a breakwater, along which are displayed scenes from the everyday lives and leisure activities of the visitors and inhabitants of the areas around the Port of Barcelona. The display evokes life between 1901 and 1999, a time not so far away. The exhibition also has touch-sensitive resources and macro information and Braille for visually-impaired visitors.
